Play Therapy with Barbara gives children and adolescents a way to work through what words can't always reach, through play and creative, integrative approaches suited to each individual.

“Toys are children's words and play is their language.”
Garry L. Landreth
My background is in primary education, where I spent many years working with children and young people. I hold a BA (Hons) from NUI Galway and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Through my work with children, my interest in their emotional wellbeing and development grew, which led me to further my training in therapeutic work.
I completed a Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills and a Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy through NUI Galway and APAC, and have since completed an MA in Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy at IICP College. I am also an accredited Play Therapist with Play Therapy Ireland.
My approach is play-based, creative, integrative and trauma-informed. I believe children often communicate through play when words are difficult, and I aim to provide a safe, supportive space where they can express themselves, explore their experiences and develop ways of coping that feel right for them.
I believe parents and carers are an important part of the therapeutic process too. I stay in regular contact throughout therapy, offering support and helping parents understand and respond to their child's needs, while respecting the child's own therapeutic space.
Alongside my clinical work, I am also a Creative and Integrative Supervisor, supporting other play therapists in their practice.
I work from Bracken Business Centre in Galway.
Play therapy is a specialist form of therapy that uses play and creative materials, such as drawing, sand tray work, puppetry, movement and story, as the main way a child communicates, rather than relying on words. It's especially useful when a child doesn't yet have the vocabulary, or isn't ready, to describe how they're feeling or what's troubling them. Working through play like this can feel safer than talking directly, and helps build the resilient relationships and coping skills that support a child well beyond the therapy room.
With adolescents, I draw on an integrative approach, combining creative, psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural (CBT) methods, meeting each young person where they're at, developmentally and emotionally, rather than working to one fixed model.
Sessions are tailored to each child or adolescent, from age 4 and up. Common reasons families reach out include:
Play doesn't rely on verbal processing, so it works well for children who find it hard to put feelings into words, and the goal is always to support wellbeing on the child's own terms.
Call or email to talk through what's going on and ask any questions.
A meeting with parents or carers to understand your child's needs.
Regular weekly sessions in a dedicated playroom, at your child's own pace.
Ongoing check-ins to share progress and support strategies at home.
A calm, dedicated space stocked for creative, expressive play. Sessions are led at your child's own pace.
“My child used to struggle with crowds and going to school. Since starting with Play Therapy with Barbara, his happy, confident self has come back to him.”
